New album is just out in the UK, quite intrigued to get a listen. Hope there isnt to much messing about with electronic-y sounds. Here is a little gem of a duet with Matthew Perryman Jones.

Bell X1 on WXPN

In all honesty i haven't given 'Bloodless Coup' the time it probably deserves. I respect Bell X1, i respect them for trying to advance their sound, taking their music on a journey from an origin that seems to be afraid to get stuck in the static environment of acoustic instrument and voice. However after listening to their show with WXPN I sometimes wish they would strip the music back alot more. The first song 'Velcro' sounds incredible, twice as incredible as its studio shadow. Take a listen to the first five minutes of this, its awesome.

I was round at my mate Stu's for dinner on Saturday evening and he gave me an introduction to these guys. Its brilliant. The aim of the project was to bring to fruition the idea of making hymns accessible and known again.

I love how they came up with their name, they state - the name comes from a reference to page 116 in our copy of the magicians nephew. by C.S. Lewis. It is a poignant passage where Aslan begins to sing Narnia into creation out of a black void.

It starts, “In the darkness something was happening at last. A voice had begun to sing. It was very far away and Digory found it hard to decide from what direction is was coming. Sometimes it seemed to come from all directions at once. Sometimes he almost thought it was coming out of the earth beneath them. Its lower notes were deep enough to be the voice of the earth herself. There were no words. There was hardly even a tune. But it was, beyond comparison, the most beautiful noise he had ever heard. It was so beautiful he could hardly bear it.”

The heart strings

This is a great tune from Sucioperro's new album, THE HEART STRING & HOW TO PULL IT! I havent listened to the whole album yet but they worked on it (as it seems they have on previous albums) with Chris Sheldon who has mixed for the Foo Fighters and Biffy, so it should be a good listen.

Ok so i love a bit of music on in the background when i am trying to do something productive, or sometimes just to have a little wordless excellence hovering around you as you try to chill out. Here are my top 10 at the moment.....

John Butler Trio - yet another band from the land down under.

Yet more australian music.......I had heard of the John Butler Trio in years gone bye (apparently that’s how you talk when you hit your late twenties), the song Betterman was popular and came out in the mid naughties. I happened to be in HMV when I was back home and noticed their new album, April Uprising, so I had to buy it, it's a great album and definitely worth a listen. It was interesting to read that one of the Amazon reviewers had stated that these guys where like the ‘Australian Dave Matthews Band’, I would have to say they definitely aren’t, but despite these falsities, the band have at least opened up for the DMB whilst the ‘kings’ of diversity were on tour and they do make exceedingly good music.

It is hard to classify the John Butler Trio into a particular musical genre, the Dobro isn’t that widely used in mainstream rock and pop, but throughout this album you can definitely hear a little bit celtic-folky-bluesy-rocky-pop going on. So if that sounds like it might intrigue you I would definitely give them a listen. It will be worth your while and I don’t think you will be disappointed, even less so if you buy the album as there is just short of 20 songs and the enclosed little booklet is pretty genius.

Its hard to identify stand out tracks however I love the beats and lyrics in ‘One way road’ and the laid back almost Chilli’s feel to ‘I’ll do anything’.

The Temper Trap - Conditions

I managed to get my hands on this album the other day - a bargain from e-bay. I heard Sweet Disposition on the radio and it really stood out and I wasn’t very surprised that the rest of the album is excellent as well, even though some people seem to be giving it negative press? It’s definitely worth a listen if not a purchase; slightly MGMT in places but I prefer the vocals and melody lines by quite some distance. The Temper Trap are also the first Australian band that has made an impact on me in quite a while, the dormant gap spanning from Silverchair’s ‘Neon Ballroom’ and covering many Neighbours dropouts along the way, may just have found some closure.
